This summer Jelgava and its vicinity have many new things to offer in terms of recreation, entertainment and culture. Be sure to plan spending some time in Jelgava area this summer as people of all ages and interests will have something to do there.

In Jelgava

Possibility to climb the tower of Jelgava History and Art Museum of Ģederts Eliass

Starting from May you can climb the tower of the building, which is known under its historic name “Academia Petrina”, and enjoy panorama view of the surroundings from a small balcony. This year the Museum offers new, virtual expositions to be seen with 3D glasses: “Zemgale national costume and its wearing traditions” and “Wars and soldier in Jelgava through the times”.


Renovated premises in Jelgava Palace museum

Jelgava Palace museum has opened its doors after renovation of premises and offers an exhibition of materials from the Latvian State Historical Archives “From Duke Gotthard to Duke Jacob”. Currently major reconstruction works are underway in Jelgava Palace – part of renovation of Jelgava Palace façade has been completed, which allows seeing the true beauty of the palace and encourages getting familiar with its interesting history.


Watchtower and “safari” with wild horses in Lielupe floodplain meadows

A new wooden watchtower with facilitated picnic place has been created in Jelgava Pils Island, allowing observation of wild horses, birds and city panorama in Lielupe floodplain meadows, which is protected nature territory. The watchtower is 19.2 m or six storeys high. Around 70 wild horses live in Pils Island – it is best to view and get to know them with the help of environmental guide, who offers trips with an off-road vehicle to the end of the island and gain authentic experience amidst the wild horse herd.


New route for exploring the city: “Jelgava – city of sculptures”

Jelgava is rich in sculptures, which have both high artistic value and interesting stories. That is why a new route has been created to explore the city “Jelgava – city of sculptures”, which you can take on foot or bicycle. The most recent sculpture in the city is the “Time train”, which has been made of a 250 years old great oak tree that had to be cut down due to damage. Length of the sculpture route is 15 km and it can be completed in 2 to 3 hours. Route map is available at the Regional tourism centre of Jelgava or can be downloaded at visit.jelgava.lv.


In Jelgava region 

Lielplatone Manor laundry house


Laundry house has been renovated in Lielplatone Manor in Jelgava region – an authentic 18th -19th century laundry house, which offers an educational program on ancient laundry traditions.  The laundry house has three storeys; each of them is furnished in accordance with the historical functions: on the first floor you can familiarize yourself with the ancient laundry washing and ironing process; drying room is found on the second floor and a laundry maid’s room - on the third floor. Groups can participate in ancient laundry demonstrations under the guidance of the laundry maid. In 2019 the renovated laundry house was placed 1st in the competition “Annual Latvian Construction Award 2018” under the nomination – “Restoration”.


Improved Eleja Manor park

Historical paths have been restored in the romantic Eleja Manor park, a bridge has been built across the ditch to the peninsula and two new interactive objects, which could be interesting for the visitors, have been created: the sculpture “Love” by the sculptor Gļebs Panteļejevs, which is best revealed in all its charm in the late evening hours, and the environmental object “Conversation”, which allows people to talk, while standing each on their own bank of the water reservoir. Tourist groups are warmly welcomed and offered tea in the romantic and renovated Tea House by a guide in period costume. This year Tea festival will be celebrated for the first time in the Tea House and Eleja park on 20th of July.


Berķenes muižā – SPA centrs

Jelgavas novadā Berķenes muižas kungu nama pagrabstāvā 2019.gadā atvērts individuālais SPA centrs. Piedāvājumā ūdens procedūras labsajūtas un veselības uzlabošanai: sauna un turku/tvaika pirts, burbuļvanna, kāju kontrastvanna, baseins ar pretstraumi, kaskādi, zemūdens pēdu un muguras masāžu. SPA pieejams tikai individuāliem apmeklējumiem 1-10 personām. Muižā var arī nakšņot un rīkot nelielus pasākumus.


In Ozolnieki region

The home of Jānis Čakste – a new museum for the first president of Latvia

“Auči”, the family home of the first president of Latvia Jānis Čakste is found in Ozolnieki region, Salgale district, on the bank of Lielupe River. The museum exposition is exhibited in the new museum building, which tells about the fate of the president and his family under the context of the development of Latvian history and democracy in a modern and contemporary form.


Inflatable water attractions

The biggest wakeboard and active water recreation park in Latvia “5 Masti” in Ozolnieki Lake offers to enjoy exciting adventures on water for the entire family – the biggest inflatable water attraction park in the Baltics.
