Svēte Floodplains

The Svēte Floodplains Nature Park was established in 2004 within the framework of Natura 2000 to ensure conservation of rare and specially protected wild birds, plant species and habitat.

The Svēte floodplains are significant area in Latvia and Europe for waterfowl spring migration, when more than 20,000 species gather in the floodplains at the same time. Species include corn-crake, pintail, bittern, little eagle, black stork, snake-eagle, etc. So far, a total of 45 protected bird species have been registered in the Svēte floodplains.

The high polder dams of Svēte River provide a wonderful platform for bird watching, as well as spending time outdoors. The dams provide good close up and panoramic views.
